Scabbard for M1891 Socket Bayonet Scabbard for use with Russian M1891 socket bayonets captured during the First World War, along with 7.62 mm. Mosin-Nagant rifles.

Russia did not supply a scabbard, preferring that soldiers keep the bayonet fixed all of the time. However, Austria, Finland, Germany, and Romania manufactured scabbards for use with bayonets captured from the Russians.

This example is believed to have been imported from Romania.

VZ-24 Knife bayonet for use on the 8mm. Czechoslovak VZ–24 Mauser rifle.

These bayonets were made in large numbers for export during the 1930s, including a sizeable contract for Romania that began in 1938.

This bayonet bears both the Romanian "CM" marking and the Romanian-format serial number used with their VZ–24 rifles.

It was originally made in the Czechoslovak Republic, with the metal in the white.  It was subsequently reworked in Romania, where it was blued and the grips replaced.

The CM acceptance mark was once thought to indicates that the rework was done at the Copsa Mica arsenal in Cugir, however, this has been discounted. It is now believed most likely to represent Comisia Militara (the Romanian arms acceptance commission).

VZ-24 This VZ-24 bayonet was manufactured in Romania. It is believed that these were made some time after Romania's receipt of Czechoslovak VZ-24 exports (i.e., post-1942) as replacements for VZ-24 bayonets lost or destroyed on the Eastern Front.

The Romanian manufacturer represented by the “double horse head” trademark was a joint-venture subsidiary of the famous Redtenbacher firm of Austria, one of the world’s leading producers of agricultural cutting blades (scythes, etc.). Created in 1923, Prima Fabrică Română de Cuțite și Oțelării Simon Redtenbacher Seel Wwe și Fii - SAR (in English, First Romanian Factory of Knives and Steelworks Simon Redtenbacher (in spirit), Widow and Sons, LLC) was located in Sibiu.

After the Communist takeover in 1948, the company was nationalized. Following the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the company was privatized again. Known today as ICOS-Sibiu, the company's website has commercial cutlery images selected from their 1936–44 catalogs, including KS98 dress bayonets with the double horse head trademark.

AKM Type I
Knife bayonet for use with the 7.62 mm. Pistol Mitralieră model 1963 (PA md. 63) assault rifle, variant of the Kalashnikov AKM.

A copy of the Russian 6X3 bayonet with a reddish-brown plastic grip. Black steel Type I scabbard with a tan or gray rubber insulator. Brown leather retention strap.

The Romanian scabbard has a wire loop for attaching the customary clip-on belt hanger, however, Romania typically used a leather or nylon frog that wraps around the insulator.

The AKM rifle with which this bayonet was issued was made in 1986.

The belt hanger measures 3.25 in. (83 mm.) long by 0.625 in. (16 mm.) wide.

The AKM rifle with which this bayonet was issued was likely made in 1963–64 or 1970–71.

Pușcă Automată model 1986 (PA md. 86) assault rifle, a variant of the Kalashnikov AK74. The PA md. 86 is better known to collectors by its export designation, AIMS–74.

A copy of the Russian 6X4 bayonet, the Romanian AKM Type II bayonet represents a transition between the AKM Type I and Type II bayonets, mating the Type I scabbard with the Type II bayonet. The scabbard has a gray rubber insulator. The bayonet has a brown leather retention strap.

The Romanian triangle & arrow factory mark is very similar to the Izhevsk Arsenal mark used on Russian bayonets. The best point of identification is the fletching on the arrow. Fletching on the Romanian arrow is an outline, where the fletching is solid on the Russian arrow.

Unlike the AKM Type I bayonets produced by Romania, the AKM Type II carries only the last four digits of the rifle’s serial number, making it impossible to determine when this example was produced or issued.

It is unclear how many AKM Type II Transitional bayonets were made. However, they are comparatively scarce compared to the AKM Type I. Romania also produced a true AKM Type II bayonet, with the plastic scabbard. These are rare and seldom encountered.
